Shaw to apply to crtc for all news Channel Licence

Summary
According to Vlessing, (2014) in his article “Shaw to apply to CRTC for all-news channel licence” in Media in Canada, Shaw Communication recently applied to the CRTC for a licence in order to operate an  all-news channel, which the company hopes to add to their specialty channel featuring all-news. CBC, CTV and other news organizations already provides all news channels; however, Shaw’s all-news services would be different because it would be offered locally. The new channel will be called Global News 1 and it will “a new hybrid local/national, English category C” .There are no other companies offering these kinds of services locally. The new channel will be given as a choice and customers won’t be obligated to purchase the new channel. Shaw has another news channel in British Columbia known as Global News BC1.

Opinion
An all news channel is interesting, but personally I would not purchase an all news channel. My reason is the news carries bad news. Most of the stories in the news nowadays are about murder, violence, and robbery, who want to hear bad news all day 24.7. No thank you.

Questions
1 Would you get an all news channel?
2 Do you recommend young children watch the news?

Shaw Communications sees Weakness at cable unit

Shaw Communications - Changing the digital world one step at a time

Summary
Shaw Communications, located in Western Canada, experienced an increased in profits of 3% from its cable and satellite divisions. Furthermore, the company had anticipated a decline in profit for their cable business for the upcoming year. However, revenue forecast for the cable division dropped to 2.2 percent from where it was last year.  Additional, the company’s resources for 2012 were $550 million, which was slashed to $450 million.  According to the article, “The Calgary-based Company is fighting a difficult battle against Vancouver-based telecoms company Telus Corp, which is assertively promoting a rival TV service”. The company’s plan for a cellular network was canceled, thus giving Telus an advantage.  Shaw lost $45,564 existing cus customers, despite a gain of more than 46,564 additional new customers. Internet and home phones subscribers rose.

Opinion
Cable companies today are struggling to keep subscribers because there are many other alternatives out there such as, Netflix. Netflix is cheaper, compare to cable.  Their monthly fee is $8.00 for unlimited movies, compare to cable prices ranging from $60 to $130 monthly packages, as you must purchase channels already in a bundle as there is no choice you must purchase the bundles whether your want to or need.

Questions
1 Do you have cable, satellite or Netflix?
2 Why can’t cable companies give us the choice to choose whatever channels we need?

Shaw Robot Mascots Recall Bell’s Beavers

Summary

Shaw Communications is set to change their company’s logo and also introduce two animated robots, Bit and Bud to the public as their new mascots. Shaw, will introduce the new characters, by way of television, newspaper and other media outlets. The story of the mascots is that they are a colony of robots living in the underbelly of a television network; however, the public will only become familiar with two of them, Bit and Bud. Through Bit and Bud, the company gets the public to understand the technological side of their company.  Shaw compares their new mascots, to Frank and Gordon the Beavers from the Bell commercials in the 2005 – 2008era. They became celebrities in the advertising and promotional business, but soon became tiresome.  In a marketing poll the Beavers were either loved or hated. Shaw believes this will not happen to their mascots because these characters are not speaking on behalf of the organization, but rather, they are actually the workers.

Opinion
I have seen the commercials featuring Bit and Bud and they are cute, lovable and funny. These bots will certainly get your attention and give you a chuckling after seen the commercial. Although, I do wonder what affect these two will have on the company, and in increasing the company’s product brand.

Questions
1 Have you ever seen the any commercials with Bit and Bud?
2 Are the Bit and Bud commercials effective?
