Shaw Communications to lay off 400 workers

Summary
The Calgary based company Shaw Communications plans, to downsize its workforce by laying off three percent of their employees. This will impact approximately 400 people. In an effort to make their services more efficient and to eliminate work duplication, their services will be under one umbrella. According to the article, about 140 employees from the Calgary area will be affected. However, approximately 100 new people will be hired to support the new structure. The company’s operations will be divided into business and residential consumers. As per the author, specialty channels such as HGTV and Food Network, which are operated Shaw Media, will remain the same.

Opinion
One of the downsides of running or owning a business is the tough decision companies must make to let employees go so that they can restructure their company and make it more efficient. As per the article, Shaw will be letting go of 140 people, while at the same time, hiring 100 new people. However, the employees that they are letting go know the innermost running’s of the company; why not take these same employees and train them to do what they will be hiring new staff to do?

Questions
1 Have you ever been laid off?
2 Do you think employers are loyal to their employees?
